I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a huge fan of soccer. Some of my buddies love it, and I’ve started to grow to appreciate it on some level. However, I love this country and sports, and when a team representing this country competes, I get excited…no matter the sport.
It is with that sentiment that I’m letting my fellow Menterneters know that the US Men’s National (soccer) team is taking on Mexico in their opening match of the final round of qualifying* for the 2010 FIFA World Cup next Wednesday, February 11th.
The other reason I’m writing this is because I was pissed upon finding out that the Mexican midfielder Antonio Naelson, or “Sinha”, was quoted as saying, “There’s too much noise for a team [US] that’s not true. They might be favorites in the game due to playing at home, but for me, Mexico is better as a team.”
Now, what I know about the US National team you could fit in a thimble, and I know even less about the team from Mexico. However, when an opponent of America starts trash talking, it gets my blood boiling. I just can’t help it.
That’s what I came here today to write, my fellow Americans. If any of you feel inspired, there will be a contingent of fans and US supporters at Lansdowne Road in Manhattan cheering on our team next Wednesday, the 11th.
God Bless you, and God Bless America!!!
*I have no idea how many games they have to win to qualify, but I’m pretty sure winning this match can’t hurt.
[Thanks to RJT for the tip]
