Today, people all over the world are about to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, that’s 43 for you simpletons. The pundits will talk about the Cardinals offense, the Steelers defense, Larry Fitzgerald, Jr., who already has set a record for most yards by a receiver in the post season, how the Steelers are going for a record 6th Lombardi Trophy, how the Cardinals are playing in their first Super Bowl in team history. And, how the coach of the Cardinals used to be the offensive coordinator of, you guessed it, the Pittsburgh Steelers back when they won their last Super Bowl.
Most people watching the game are just going to eat and drink as much as they possibly can.
As a Packer fan, I’ve got a lot more riding on this game than I ever thought I could. Back in April, against my better judgment, I was in Las Vegas hanging out with an old college buddy. On my final day there, I was going to place some bets on the upcoming NFL season. I was only putting $25 on the Packers to win the Super Bowl at 8 to 1 (That’s $200 if they won the Championship, again for you simpletons.) Before placing my bet, I made a call to my father, and he said he wanted to put money on a long shot. I was reading him the odds of the NFL teams when I came to the Arizona Cardinals at 40 to 1, and my dad stopped me and told me to put 50 bucks on the Cards. I asked, “The Cardinals? Really?” respectfully but with quite a bit of doubt, I have to admit. My Dad said, “Yeah! They’ve got a really good coach!”
Here we are today, and the Arizona Cardinals are in the Super Bowl!! They’ve been called the worst team to make the playoffs…ever. As a matter of fact, when the NFL post season started, the odds against the Cards winning the big game was still 35 to 1! In spite of all that, they’ve got a shot to be the best team in football.
And if you simpletons haven’t figured it out by now, even though I put it in the title of this article, if the Cardinals win the Super Bowl (’knock wood’), my Dad wins $2,000!!!!!!
[Update: Sadly, his Dad did not win 2K. It was, however, a noble effort and we salute all things Super and most things Bowl.]
